Travelers’ tales speak of icy demons that stalk the frozen waste, hunting mortals and raising the dead to do their bidding. Most denizens of temperate lands dismiss these stories as barbaric superstition, but behind them lies the horrifying truth of the white walkers.

White walkers appear human from a distance save for their glowing blue eyes. A closer view reveals their withered, sinewy appearance. Immune to the cold of their environments, white walkers rarely wear more clothing than a simple loincloth, and carry swords or spears that are made of blue ice yet have the hardness of steel.

What the white walkers desire is unknown, though they take a detached pleasure from slaying mortals and raising them as undead servants. Stories tell of whole legions of white walkers and their zombie slaves, the walkers mounted on undead warhorses or monstrous spiders, sweeping away all resistance in their path. Some barbarian tribes attempt to placate the white walkers with infant sacrifices, and such blasphemous offerings seem to work. What the walkers do with the unfortunate babes is best left unguessed.
