“Chaos Feeder” by Brian and Brendon Fraim, © Kenzer and Co.

[Because I can do puns too. The name I’ve given the chaos feeder comes from “Eris” + “parasite”, since it feeds on chaotic thoughts.]

Erisite
This creature resembles an
enormous spider crab, with six stilt-like legs and two long arms ending in
pincers. Four eye stalks grow from the top of its body, surveying its
surroundings. Its underside is occupied by an enormous grinding maw bristling
with hooks, suckers and stingers.

Erisites,
sometimes referred to as chaos feeders, are arthropod-like monsters native to
the Lower Planes. Unlike many other lawful evil creatures, they do not find
chaos to be anathema—rather, they seek out chaotic areas in order to force them
to become more orderly and lawful. Chaos magic either slides off the beasts or
empowers them, and their bite literally drains the chaotic impulses from the
minds and souls of their victims. This forced alignment change makes erisites
favored minions of the kytons, who employ erisites as torturers and
indoctrination specialists in their cabals.

Most
chaos feeders live in Hell, particularly the lightless vaults of Erebus or in
the ruins of Stygia. The cult of Mammon is fond of chaos feeders, as their
orderly minds and drive for organization makes them perfect accountants.
Despite their hideous appearance, they are extremely clever, and can think
circles around many lesser devils. As such, they often act as minor power
brokers. Erisites always give an agreed-upon wage for services done for them,
although they are skilled at convincing their minions to accept less-than-fair
compensation.

The
relatively low Hit Dice of a chaos feeder, combined with its powerful natural
attacks, makes them tempting targets for lesser
planar binding
spells cast by novice conjurers. Due to their ability to
ignore chaos magic, more than one ignorant summoner has called an erisite to
the Material Plane, only to have it leave the magic circle against law with ease. On the Material Plane, erisites
are usually found underground, where they may have an entire tribe of humanoids
under their thumbs as servitors, or they may act as treasurers for more
powerful monsters. Clerics of Mammon or any of the kyton demagogues may call an
erisite with lesser planar ally,
whereupon they are much more likely to be cooperative, as long as they are
properly compensated for services rendered.
