[So the Eer-Moonan is a legitimate Australian mythological monster, but one that I was unable to find a good description of. It appears as being something like a cross between an echidna and a dog in Oberon Zell-Ravenheart’s A Wizard’s Bestiary, but that may be the least reliable source I own. I decided to pair the name with the decidedly bizarre appearance of the Narrabeen Lake monster from the 1970s, depicted above]
Eer-Moonan This strange beast is thickset,
with elephantine gray skin and stout hind limbs. Its forearms are small and
weakly muscled. Its face is tubular, culminating in a snout tipped with a
circular mouth ringed with teeth.
Eer-moonan
are unusual blood-drinking predators of swamps and lakes. Much like a
hippopotamus, they are capable of walking along the bottom of waterways as well
as swimming. They are intelligent despite their bestial appearance, and have a
disturbing fondness for the blood of humanoid prey. Marshes home to a group of
eer-moonan often lack humanoid species such as boggards and lizardfolk, and
even larger predators steer clear of these prowling monsters. They are ambush
predators, making up for their ponderous movements with surprisingly soft footfalls.
Eer-moonan never use weapons or armor—their hands lack opposable thumbs, and
they are incapable of using tools.
Eer-moonan
are highly social creatures. Their groups consist of a few mated pairs, their
adult offspring and a few unmated, unrelated individuals that have joined from
other pods. Eer-moonan are seemingly capable of forming long-lasting
friendships between one another, and the slayer of an eer-moonan may find
himself the victim of ever-escalating retribution from its peers. Eer-moonan young
are highly dependent on their parents for several years. They nest in muddy
holes on shorelines; the young are left behind while the parents hunt. Upon
returning, the parents regurgitate up a bloody feast for their offspring.
Eer-moonan can live for up to two centuries if disease and violence do not take
their toll, and they reproduce infrequently during their lifetimes. An
eer-moonan stands about four feet tall and weighs 150 pounds.
Eer-moonan roam the swamps of Gladia’s mainland, preying on humanoid prey like aikelars. They are rivals of letiche, and the two species will engage in brutal contests when they share territory.
