[Why did I change the name? One of the most charming things, in my opinion, about Gygaxian ooze monsters is their divisions into oozes, slimes, jellies and puddings. Plus, I dig alliteration.]
Summoning Slime This man-sized mound of protoplasm
extends a pair of whip-like tentacles from its bulk. Golden and silvery runes
flare and ripple along its surface.
Summoning slimes are creatures that are created through conjuration
accidents. A magic circle, especially one created by a novice acting beyond
their capabilities, can sometimes absorb the intellect of the creature that is
meant to be summoned. This hideous fusion creates a living mass of quintessence
and magic potential that typically escapes the would-be summoner and make a
life for itself.
Summoning slimes vary in alignment based on the creature that was
originally intended to be summoned. Celestials result in good-aligned slimes,
elementals in neutral-aligned ones, and fiends in evil slimes. Regardless of
their alignment, summoning slimes are less concerned with their former cosmic
place and more concerned with the primal creature comforts of a beast. They use
their summoned creatures to gather them food, protect them from larger or
smarter creatures and transport them across difficult hazards of the
subterranean world.
Some particularly ambitious summoning slimes join forces with other
creatures to provide themselves with additional protection and food gathering
opportunities. These more social slimes impress upon humanoids the power their
summoned creatures give them, and may even pose as divine emissaries
(especially for evil or chaotic slimes). Good and lawful slimes of a social
bent usually use their powers to find employment as security for other
creatures.
Summoning slimes are most common in the Schools of Soaring Skies and Sunken Stone, where they are typically of neutral alignment. The scholars generally can manage to convince them to take up employment as security for the campuses.
